Chapter 5 Review (pg. 130 Part 1)


  1. Loyalist: A colonist who supported Great Britain in the American Revolution.

Patriot: An American colonist who supported the fight for independence.

2. Stamp Act: A law passed by the British Parliament in 1765 requiring colonists to pay a

tax on newspapers, pamphlets, legal documents, + even playing cards.

Tax: Money people pay to a government so that it can perform public services.

3. Militia: a group of volunteers who fought in times of emergency during the colonial

period and the American Revolution.

American Revolution: The war between Great Britain + its 13 American colonies from

1775 to 1783 that led to the founding of the U.S.A.

4. Battle of Trenton + Battle of Princeton: These 2 battles gave Americans hope in the

Continental Army.

5. NJ Plan: The plan offered by the small states at the Constitutional Convention of 1787

that would have given all states an equal number of representatives in Congress.

Great Compromise:  The delegates agreed that Congress would have 2 houses, the

House of Representatives (# of state reps. based on population) + the Senate (each state

= 2 reps.)
